Three Ottoman coins of my collection

Here are three ottoman coins that i have in my collection

The first one is a KM#670, 40 Para coin of Abdul Mejid, strucked at the 19th year of his reign (1858). I love this coin because of its chocolate patina. Weight: 21.02 g, diameter: 37 mm.

The second one is a KM#701, 20 Para coin of Abdul Aziz, strucked at the 4th year of his reign (1861). Weight: 10.65 g, diameter: 32 mm.

The third one is a KM#599, 5 Kurush coin of Mahmud II, strucked at the 25th year of his reign (1832). Weight: 14.85 g, diameter: 39 mm. A real big one coin.

Three very well preserved coins. My preferred one is the last, because it is often badly struck. This one also has a weak area (I suspect an uneven thickness flan) but most of the coins of this and similar types look spotty, with parts in grey, due to the low grade silver surface, other parts looking blackish brown were the little bit of silver has worn off. Yours has a nice, even colour across the whole coin, giving a much better idea of what the coins looked like when new.

BTW, these are excellent coins to practice your Arabic on. The legends are written in modern Arabic and use only a few words and numbers.

Yes, indeed. I'm doing quite well in Ottoman coins, but in the others with arabic text, i have problem. Actually i have made a little practice in ottoman scripts: I am studying the local history and genealogical trees of my area and i have found very useful information in ottoman archives of the 19th century. Especially names and dates. It's a good practice, but it takes me a long time, because these archives were written in turkish language, with arabic text and often greek names and places, with the Turk writter trying to write down letters like Theta, Phi etc. on his own way
