I guess with this so called error printing, the resale value would go up substantially. Anything that is error ridden in Numismatics world is a rare commodity. :o

Release the Bhagat Singh coin series, appeals NGO
2010-12-10

Chandigarh, Dec 10 (IANS) An NGO working to propagate the ideology of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh Friday appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to order release of the currency coins commemorating the martyr.

Members of All India Shaheed Bhagat Singh Brigade charged the central government with 'unnecessarily delaying' the circulation of these coins that were minted in the denomination of Rs.100 and Rs. 5.

'In 2007, the government had announced to issue coins bearing the image of Shaheed-e-azam (great martyr) Bhagat Singh. We have checked with the Reserve Bank of India and found the coins were made in 2008 but till date, the authorities concerned have not given the green signal to bring these out in public,' organisation chief Yadvinder Singh told reporters here.

'We have also written to the prime minister on Nov 10 this year, and sought his intervention. However, so far we have not received any reply from him. We do not understand the reason behind this delay; if they have any doubt about the popularity of this national hero, they can do some survey on their own,' added Singh, the son of Bhagat Singh's nephew Babar Singh Sandhu.

After a lot of effort, Singh has also managed to procure a couple of these coins.

'The Rs.100 coin has 50 percent silver content whereas Rs.5 coin is made of copper and zinc,' he said.

His sister Manjula Toor said: 'The young generation learns whatever they see before their eyes. Releasing the coins of Bhagat Singh is the best medium to keep his ideology alive for the masses. We appeal to the government to release them at the earliest.'

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Bimat

The proof sets and UNC sets have been issued long time ago and they have already become collectors' item because of the spelling mistakes mint made on the packaging material. The current market price I heard for a single set was beyond my imagination! :o

I wonder how did government allow distribution of sets but not the 'real' coins.. ::)

It wouldn't surprise me if this is just another sloppy bureaucratic compromise. After the decision was made, the 'crats remembered that maybe this particular figure was still a bit controversial. They couldn't admit they were wrong, but by withholding the circulation coins, only collectors would know about it. That would also explain why his supporters want those coins issued.

Officially the Reserve Bank of India Has never issued this coin for general circulation in the Market, Even there is no official Notice of Issue of Rs 5 Coin on Bhagat Singh on the Website of the RBI. www.rbi.org.in

By definition if coins are  not issued for circulation , either it must be Proof /UNC - NCLT or  (NCNLT may be).

Even some interested NGO's had appealed the government to issue the coins for circulation , no decision by govt as usual.

Hence it remain as Mint released sets.

Cheers ;D

Certainly the  dealers would be more delighted to get the bags at whatever prices,  due to zero numismatic attachment  as there objective is to do business and make money.

Satisfaction of a  collector can't get  fulfill with  bag of coins , because a collector not only love coin but also love its  history . If there is no urge &  passion a bag full of coin wouldn't give any satisfaction.

Spending money on coin without knowledge  is useless , further  buying any coins is easy if one can afford or else.

At the end :The joy of collecting is that we all choose what we want to collect.  The joy of collecting is that we all choose what we want to collect  The joy of collecting is that we all choose what we want to collect  The joy of collecting is that we all choose what we want to collect

we are saying 2 different things here.  I am not talking about what you should be collecting or what your choice is.  I am merely stating that the coins of bhagat singh are available if you choose to get them.  also depending on the coins you can still get re-strikes or novelties ordered.

what satisfies someone might not satisfy someone else also useful and useless are very personal terms. I can only speak for myself not for anyone else and certainly not for the entire collector community

Cheers ;D

Regarding our previous discussion which are in general terms & my point is only related to  , avoid paying exorbitant prices for such normal contemporary coins. :D

It is dream of every collector  to fill the gap of  missing coins  in the collection. Once these  coins  with limited edition will be available  in re strike   or release for circulation in abundance one could always include it .

Some time patience pays a lot  .
