Oesho

Dear Aidan,
Yes, the 8 anna 1919-1920 is a pretty rare issue. I have only two specimen, both dated 1919, respectively of the Calcutta mint and Bombay mint. The coin shown above is an issue of the Calcutta mint (no dot in the exergue).
The mintage figures for this issue are rather limited:
1919 Calcutta mint 2,979,980; Bombay mint 1,400,000
1920 Calcutta mint proof only; Bombay mint 1,000,000
With the growing popularity of coin collecting in India (and other Commonwealth countries) such coins with limited mintages tends to become very scarce. Imagine if only a 0.5 % op the Indian population would collect those coins (= approx. 5,000,000 people) and all the issued pieces would still be available, there wouldn't be sufficient material for every one. Taking in account that approximately only 1 in a thousand survives (due to demonetisations, melting, etc.)  you may calculate its rarity.

I am touching the old topic with new query  about these coins

KM# 519 4 ANNAS
6.5000 g., Copper-Nickel Ruler: George V Obv: Crowned bust left
within circle Obv. Leg.: GEORGE V KING EMPEROR • INDIA •
Rev: Denomination within square Note: Calcutta Mint issues have
no mint mark. Bombay Mint issues have a small raised dot on the
reverse at the bottom near the rim.

1921(b) 1,219,000 mintage

I understand that 4 Anna -1921 is scarce coin of this series , any idea about its availability in Indian market.

Another one is :

KM# 520 8 ANNAS
Copper-Nickel Ruler: George V Obv: Crowned bust left
Obv. Leg.: GEORGE V KING EMPEROR Rev: Denomination
and date within scallop, square surrounds Note: Calcutta Mint
issues have no mint mark. Mumbai (Bombay) Mint issues have
a small raised dot on the reverse at the bottom near the rim.

Lot of fakes are available ,does  genuine one is available with both years 1919-1920 ?

Appreciate comments.

Cheers  ;D

Does 4 Annas 1921 exist for Calcutta mint  apart from [proof or restrike] listed every where,  I found a coin of year 1921 weighing 6.53-6.54  gm   Actual Diameter (mm)   23.5-25.0
and seems perfectly  normal apart from wear due to heavy circulation on George V effigy and other higher areas.

Is it possible that :
1. Mint mark also wear out  but no such symptoms on coin.
2. Calcutta mint had issued but not listed or recorded.
3. Coin is non magnetic so possibilty of  casting or tin metal ruled out.

Unable to solve the mystery. Appreciate if some one throw light on it.
Cheers ;D

On the 4 annas: KM doesn't give 1921(b) significantly greater value than the other available dates/mints in the series, but the mintage figures suggest that 1920(b) and 1921(b) should be considerably rarer than 1919(b) and a lot rarer than the 1919/20 Calcutta issues:

1919(c): 18,632,000
1919(b): 7,672,000
1920(c): 18,191,000
1920(b): 1,666,000
1921(b): 1,219,000

On the 8 annas: 1919 for both mints and 1920(b) all exist according to KM and none are hugely costly, despite all having quite low mintages:

1919(c): 2,980,000
1919(b): 1,400,000
1920(b): 1,000,000

I'm surprised it's worth anyone forging these for the collector market, though there may well be contemporary forgeries designed to pass as money.

hi,
8 anna is a scarce coin by all means... and in good condition the 1919 one costs approx 3500 INR.. and the 1920 is around 7000-8000 INR last I checked at 2-3 dealers in delhi.. The KM prices are far from the market prices of scarce issues as of today.. It's certainly worth forging Fosseway.. and the forged 8 annas are there in the market in heaps.. here is the pic of my 8 anna 1919 bombay mint
cheers  :)
