unknown Egypt (?) Token
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:26:14 PM »
Can anyone help me reading this token (not my own piece) ? As the denomination is Milliemes it should be probably from Egypt, but Sudan and Palestine are possible, too.

The text at top appears to say mashru' al-qurush (valid [for a] piastre), but that's where I run out of ideas, unfortunately.

There's something strange about the text at the bottom (underneath milliemes) which I can't put my finger on. The 'flow' of it doesn't look Arabic but more like Persian.

I thought that too - though that doesn't tie in with the denomination in milliemes and piastres.  Quite odd.

There certainly were Persian enclaves within the Ottoman Empire. Could this be a holdover from those times? Persian is still encountered in modern day Azerbaijan for example.

Since we have new experts on board who read Arabic fluently, maybe this piece can be identified now?

I suggest a post to aws22 to confirm (or not...) my reading :
at top : "trial (project)qirsh (piaster")
center : "10 millimat"
at right (3 o'clock) : "resist" / at left (9 o'clock) : "solidarity"
at bottom : "to an evident independance shortly"

origin ? (Palestine ?) the other face could be useful...

Thanks! The reverse is blank. At the Egyptian Tokens group it is actually shown as "جمعية القرش.10 مليم .1931" (translated in English: shark association 10 mm 1931).
