unknown ottoman coin
« on: February 05, 2013, 09:59:22 PM »
Usually I think I know a little of ottoman coinage, but this piece breaks my brain. As I am offered this coin by scan without weight and diametre I cannot give those dates ...

I hope anyone will help me with this coin!

6 Kurush of Mahmud 2 Ottoman Empire Turkey. The weight is somewhat important, they are known to be faked although at a quick glance this one looks okay. (yes they put holes in the fake ones as well)

Yes, the circle of blossoms around obverse and reverse suggests this, but several other details do not fit:

- the flower beside the tughra, instead of the sript
- 1277 perhaps 1222 instead of 1223
- the reignal year 17, instead of 26-32 for the 10th series
- the mint name, which I cannot read, but it isn't Istanbul

Best regards, Afrasi

Well!

1. I have seen a similar coin described as that on a reliable coin board at some time.
2. Maybe it was in a fake section of such a coin board and that is why I mentioned they have been faked.
3. from memory I think the coin shown was billon which was the wrong metal however I am sure it was the same obverse and reverse.
4. when it comes to mind I will PM you the link. That could be 1 minute or three weeks.

Akona20 solved it! Many thanks!

It is listed in the fake report of FORVM ANCIENT COINS:

Can anyone read the mint name, if it is a real one?

The same object is illustrated in Jem Sultan: Coins of the Ottoman Empire and Turkisch Republic (2 vols.) Thousand Oaks, 1977.
Ref.: Jem Sultan #4421 Miscellaneous section (p. 446, plate 344).
Described as:
NP935, Abdul Aziz, 1277, yr. 17!
Mint: Madeni Nuhas (copper metal)
Edge: plain. This does not seem to be a mint issue. It is relatively common.
