France: Pierre de Coubertin - born 150 years ago
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:20:06 PM »
Pierre de Coubertin, the "father" of the modern Olympic Games, was born in 1863, thus 150 years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_de_Coubertin  On that occasion, France will issue a commemorative €2 coin. Mintage 1 million in circulation quality, plus 10,000 proof and 10,000 BU pieces. Attached is an image of the design, taken from a Monnaie de Paris brochure. And yes, the actual coin will be round. ;)

I just came to know that British Virgin Islands will also issue two collector coins commemorating Pierre de Coubertin. :D There will be a Cu-Ni $1 coin and silver $10 coin..See image below, probably same design for both the coins.

Here is an image (from eurohaendler.eu) of the final design.

Yes, I know it must come as an utter surprise that a coin honoring a person depicts the face of that person.

Well there is such a thing as creativity.

Just to point out, 2013 Elysee treaty, two heads, 2012 L'Abbe Pierre, one head and 1940 speech from 2010 also a head with a bit of torso. That's 4 out of the last five designs they have accepted have been people's faces.

Yeah, it does, and the French don't like doing things the British way, apparently.

I just think that if you're going to do a commemorative, make it interesting. And the UK has some quite interesting designs.

And maybe it is not really about design. For some people a euro coin is bad, boring, dull, etc., etc. simply because it's a euro coin. 8)

The World Coin News blog has a better image. I bet he won the "moustache defying gravity" event. I wonder if his tash got him lots of girlfriends? A very creditable design, IMO.

Extravagant upper lip vegetation was fashionable in those days. Here is a contemporary moustache. :)

I do not think his "moustache" defied gravity for long. Here is an image with normal "moustache".

Right, but that is what he looked like in his later years. Not sure when his facial hair got shortened. :)
