Dijsselbloem to become new Eurogroup President
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:55:43 AM »
Today the Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem (PvdA) will become the new president of the Eurogroup. He will be Jean-Claude Juncker's successor, as Dijsselbloem is now the only remaining candidate for the job.

One difference between the two that could be important is that Juncker is the head of government in his home country of Luxembourg. This way he was a member of both the European Council and the Eurogroup, which allowed him to deal with upcoming conflicts at a relatively early stage. Dijsselbloem is "only" a minister which may make things like that a little more difficult. Will be interesting to see what that means for the future: The heads of the local member state governments have a tendency of picking "low profile" candidates, as they do not like to have potential "rivals" at the European level. See Barroso, Van Rompuy and Ashton. But at least they were able to agree on one candidate ...

He may not be a "mouth on wheels", but I bet he'll be more active than Juncker.
