« on: January 22, 2013, 12:55:24 AM »
The Clérigos Tower in Porto will be the theme of the next Portuguese €2 commem. This tower, part of the Clérigos Church, was completed in 1763, thus 250 years ago. The tower has 226 steps and a height of 76 meters. More about the architect Nicolau Nasoni is here.

Here is an image (source: coin-database.com) of the coin design. Interesting perspective or angle ...

I like it, a little different from the normal dross on a 2 euro coin!

More good news: the tower is only 425 km (264 miles) from Madrid, mostly motorway (A1, A25, A62, A50) and the route runs past Salamanca and Ciudad Rodrigo. Both towns have a connection with Porto on account of a British prime minister. :) As a bonus, visit nearby Guimarães, subject of another recent Portuguese commemorative or turn North to Vigo and its Bay for the subject of UK naval medals.

What's that bridge doing there? Don't tell me it's the husband of the tower :)

Nah, that's good old Dom Luís, I think. They even named a king after that bridge. 8)

All the kings in Portugal are Dom 8) Piccies from Google confirm that the lower part of the bridge is a circle segment, not mount fuji-shaped, though. Perspective my hind part. Maybe the designer's eyes are even worse then mine.

Problem is they have two "down there". ;)  This would be the second option:
