The catalog lists a large date and a small date cent for 1966 cents but doesn't tell how to tell the difference.

Is the coin on the right the large date?

Dale

THCoins

Yes that's the same type as difference as isindicated in the images in the Dutch "munt-almanak".
In the "big date" type the side of the second 6 extends wel beyond the right end of the top bar of the letter T below.

Is there any other year with small and large date besides 1966?

No, the two different types exist only for 1966.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Prosit

That is true but if you are interested in other variation then 1969 had two different privie marks...cock and fish.

Anyone know why there was no cent issued in 1949?

Wilhelmina abdicated unexpectedly in 1948. The mint was caught flat-footed. They had just started minting the 1948 coins.*

Juliana was as relaxed as her mother was uptight. She approved the solution to continue to mint coins dated 1948 in 1949. Dies with her portrait were ready in 1950. Time was gained by not changing the reverse.

Peter

* Patterns dated 1947 are known. Wilhelmina was difficult to work with. She refused to pose, but was finicky about details of the portrait.

The same was the case with the 5 cent coins of Suriname ( made by the dutch royal mint )
