Christian mentioned the Meißen porcelain tokens at Re: ceramic coins portugal

Presumably these are the ones he referred to...
EHRE GABED FA LICHTHEIL-ROHTGEN-ELEKTROMED-U-PHYSK-APP inner circle FRITZ KOHL LEIPZIG Rev. 100 JAHRE GES DEUTSCHER NATURFORSCHERU AERZTE LEIPZIG 1922 with crossed swords logo of Meissen; terracotta colour 42mm.; White 38.7mm.

QuoteThe few porcelain pieces from around here (DE) were usually made in Meißen and had a red-brown look; white ones were not that common. They were not terribly durable though. How big (diameter) are these Gaia pieces?

Thank you, have posted some Siamese ones there.

No doubt something will need rotating!

When I wrote that comment in the other topic, I primarily had "ersatz coins" from Meissen in mind. :)  I have two from the early 1920s, issued by the state of Saxony, which actually circulated for a short time. Those (and most city/county notgeld pieces that Meissen made) are reddish rather than white.

By the way, this "Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte" still exists today. http://www.gdnae.de/ As you can tell from your medals, it was founded in 1822. Today it is the country's biggest interdisciplinary scientific society. Maybe some more medals will be issued in ten years?

This page from a museum database lists a few of those pieces. For the inscriptions, they used quite a few abbreviations - may make it difficult to read ...

Thank you that's very interesting but now I need a braun mit Gold one!

The white I see listed as a Plakette while all the others as Medaille.

Here is a brown-golden piece from Saxony; that type was even used as (emergency) money. http://mashopsimg.com/duerr/pic/14446_20121124048_m.jpg Nice design in my opinion; not exactly cheap (€80or so) though ...

That's one of the ones from this set: http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,4032.msg23899.html#msg23899

If the one coin is €80 these days I'd love to know what the full set retails for now :-)

Yours appear to be dated 1921 (should the 1M and the 5M change positions?); the piece posted by chrisild that he talks about being used as money is dated 1920. Is there a difference between the two issues when comes to whether or to what degree they actually circulated? Maybe the 1921 pieces were souvenirs only? Maybe the 1921 pieces are less expensive than the (surprising!) price of the 1920 piece? Just questions; I don't know the answers.

Errm, right. I had totally forgotten about this topic. ;)  Those pieces - seven denominations - are dated either 1920 or 1921. The 1920 mintage figures are all in the four digit range, while 1921 is more common: between 641,000 (20 Pf) and 67,000 (20 M.) ...
