Sigismund Coin
« on: July 01, 2016, 04:24:49 AM »
Hello! I hope someone can help me identify this coin. It's silver, 20mm in size and 1.2 grams in weight. It features an eagle on one side and a rider on the other, which made me think of Lithuania. I can make out that the ruler is Sigismund, but can someone help me identify the country or issuer?

I increased the contrast on this coin about 50% to bring out detail.

Thank you so much!

Lithuania, half groat 1512 in the name of Sigismund the elder. There are many sub-types. Download Ruzas' book from the WoC bookshelf and you can determine yourself which sub-type you have. Have fun.

Legends: + MONETA : SIGISMVNDI : 12 and MAGNI : DVCIS : LITVANIE + or variant.

Peter

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Thank you so much for the assist. I'll use the reference book to track it down. Great help and a nice addition to my collection.
