Doing this for posterity's sake....

The Rupee symbol as designed by Uday Kumar was unveiled on 15 July 2010. However, a month earlier, many articles (eg this one) listed the five finalist designs which did include a submission from Mr Kumar, but not the one that won him the competition ! The govt. mysteriously delayed it's initial decision date from Feb 2010 to July 2010 only to announce a design which was not seemingly submitted to the general public that was supposed to vote on it. The new design was mostly embraced in anycase although there is a case pending in the courts.

I clearly remember voting for the 2nd to right in the top row (2nd pic)

It looks like Sridevi Sirinvasan won (rejected rupee signs picture, fourth line, fourth from left), but the officials wanted a double stroke and so they bungled the whole process. Not the first time officials make an unspeakable mess of popular voting for a design. Remember the EU stick man design? I do. They're still denying anything was wrong.

So what big deal?  Any one symbol is fine, until and unless we have a symbol.....

What I was wondering in terms of documentation, do we have anything on why there was a change of heart. And how they decided that Uday Kumar just needed to tweak his design to win ?

yes there was probably some hanky-panky in the background...but I think its better to get a factual sense than just assuming stuff...so if anyone has some concrete knowledge or was in the know some how ?.....

Yep, the previous discussions was pretty much a round-about without going anywhere.... the other link is very difficult to take at face value because of the obvious stake holders in it...but i'll read through in anycase, lets see if we can ween out any useful info for this thread's purposes  :)
