Panama wants the euro
17th oktober 2012

PANAMA-CITY - Whle in Europe the euro is judged increasingly negative, Panama has great confidence in our common European currency.Enough to make the Central-European country want to introduce the currency as legal tender.

The euro is not the first currency Panama has adopted, The US dollar is also legal tender in Panama. The official currency, the Balboa, is linked to the dollar and both can be used sid by side. Notes are of the American variant and for coins, the domestic Balboa is used most.

Now, this fast growing economy (10.6%) wants to start using euros. During a visit to Europe, president Ricardo Martinelli requested as much from federal chancellor Merkel. Panama would be the first country in the world with two foreign currencies as legal tender.

However, it would not be the first country outside the European Union to adopt the euro. European micro-states such as Monaco and Andorra have a special treaty with the EU to strike their own euro coins and Montenegro and Kosovo have unilaterally adopted the euro as legal tender, as Panama wants to do.
