Fake GH¢1 Coins In Circulation

Date: 12-Sep-2012

Barely a month after the Bank of Ghana decided to change the GH¢50 note to avoid the counterfeiting of the currency, the criminals have shifted their attention to the GH¢1 coin.

The counterfeiters are feverishly putting more of the fake GH¢1 coins in circulation, usually through the coin sellers and the smaller shops. A closer look at the fake coins reveals that the gold colour in the middle is light, when compared with the original coin. The fake coin is also bigger in size than the original one.

The flower sign around it is also thicker than the original coin. Again, whilst the original GH¢1 coin has no writings in the flower, the fake one has small number embedded in it.

The Chronicle is, however, unable to determine those behind the printing of the fake coins. We hope the security agencies would set thier investigation machinery in motion to arrest the perpetrators.

You are welcome! :)

I'm interested in both the coins (real as well as fake)..but I don't see the new coins from Ghana (after currency reform) offered on e-bay or elsewhere so often. Any particular reasons? Or are they common and I'm just not paying enough attention? ;D

They are common and that is the problem. Who will pay postage for a coin that sells at less than USD1?

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I will - if I miss it in my collection ...   ;)

I am very interested in that fake coin, too, but did not found it until today. :'(
