India 1 rupee
« on: September 05, 2012, 02:34:52 PM »
Please forgive me for the dumb questions - what I know about Indian currency can be written on the back of a small postage stamp with lots of room left over... :(. I pick them up at shows when I see they look unusual. The stained note here did not have the denomination in the usual place and so I found it interesting.

Need governors and approx year of printing
thanks

The first one is K.G. Ambegaonkar, Year 1950.

The second one is A.K. Roy - 1957.

On the second note, you can see the year on the bottom of the 1 rupee coin, printed on the note.

The 1 rupee note was the only note (prior to 2005-2006), which had the year printed on it (from 1951 onwards), at the bottom of the coin.

I would like to add that one rupee note is signed by Secretary to GOI, Ministry of Finance. One rupee note issued by Union Government. That is only actual rupee.
All other higher denomination currency notes are promissory notes issued by Governor, Reserve Bank of India. You will find "I Promise to pay the bearer a sum of rupees ---" in all higher denomination note

The first issue of Rs 1 note was by KRK Menon in the year 1949, this note is same as the design of KG Ambegoankar that you have put up.
The KRK Menon notes do not have the standard pin holes ... its amongst the rare one rupee notes going for around 6-7 K ... the others being the LK Jha, Inset B, Prefix Y going for around 4 to 5 K and the Bhootlingam of 1964 for around 10 to 20 K depending on the condition ....

The design was changed from 1951 that included the Rupee coin ...

Although the Rupee coin metal was changed to Steel in 1992, the one rupee notes  of 1992, 1993 and 1994 still have the older coins of cupro-nickel ....
