Royal Mint coins worth £50,000 stolen in Woking

30 August 2012 Last updated at 16:21 GMT

A collection of 1,000 commemorative British coins worth about £50,000 has been stolen from a house in Surrey.

Burglars took the limited edition Royal Mint coins from the property in Falstone, Goldsworth Park, Woking, on 24 August.

Detectives want to hear from people in the coin trade who may have been offered a large number for sale.

The collection of mainly £1, £2 and £5 commemorative coins mark anniversaries such as Prince Charles's 60th birthday.

Others taken include coins marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the centenary of the death of Florence Nightingale.

Det Con Yahya Aslam said: "This coin collection has been built up over the years by the owner who is naturally very distressed by what has happened.

1000 coins worth £50,000. So on an average, each coin is worth £50. I don't think those £1, £2 and £5 coins are SO expensive?!?!?

Loss means loss specially for such kind of limited edition collection built over the years.

AFAIK limited edition coins are usually expensive.

Cheers ;D
