the IRA maybe...?

There certainly were coins defaced by Irish nationalists, both at the time of the War of Independence around 1920 and during the Troubles in the 1970s and 80s. Some indeed have the initials IRA stamped across the monarch's head. I think there may be some threads on this here. (An aside, though: the Churchill crown isn't an obvious choice for an IRA supporter to deface, since it never circulated and wouldn't therefore be much good as a propaganda tool.)

Hmmmm...... now we just need one more thing....experts who can distinguish scratches on coins made by nationalists.....as opposed to coins run over by cars.....

I have seen British silver rupee coins fixed on the stairs of a temple in Trichy (If I remember correctly). I was told, it was deliberately done so that devotees would then step over them every time they climbed up the stairs of the temple..........

Awwww.... your no fun Amit....here I was, trying to get this thread evolved into the coin scratching wing, of the Indian National Congress ;D ;D

Hmmm, if you check Indian history about the defacing of British coins there are some wonderful examples to be read up on. Pass the tobacco and show the defaced coin was perhaps more than a story byline just before the First War of Independence.

Lets start a separate defaced coin thread maybe & see what we have amongst our collections ? I have a 1877 British India 1/4 Anna that's been overstruck with a persian/arabic legend, definitely a deliberate act of defiance if ever I saw one

Vic.....the discussion here is about scratches on a coin... there is no question overstrikes and punch marks were done for a purpose...but interpreting scratches on coins, in my opinion is a science, right up there with reading tea leaves...just having a little fun...long weekend coming up ;D ;D
