I have come across a seller on ebay who claims he has "TWO NOTES OF 100 RS SAME INSET SAME SERIES SAME NUMBER SAME GOVERNOR A RARE MISTAKE OF INDIAN GOVERNMENT BOTH NOTES COSTS 99999 RS POSTAGE FREE IN INDIA BOTH NOTES ARE ORIGINAL"

Even I have two five rupee notes with the same numbers, but yes, the inset is different.

If these are indeed original, it's a rare occurrence. But I have heard, that there are some notes in the market, where one of the digits has been altered. This is done in generally the notes for the Fancy numbers. Like a 666866 is doctored to read 666666.

These notes can be detected for any alterations by keeping them under an Ultra-violet bulb.

Hi...

Multiple counterfeit notes often are printed (as per press reports) with the same number of an original note...these are distributed at different places...so there is no chance of two notes with the same number coming together...perhaps this was one instance where two notes with the same number has come together... may be perhaps either both the notes or at least one note being a counterfeit one....explanation .......

I am unable to see the image from office ...
There are definately instances of 2 original notes with same numbers [errors] ...

In current times, with the scanning and printing technology available one at home, one can easily create fakes ... more so on older notes as the color used were regular ...

I had picked up one lot of Error notes in the early nineties which included two notes with the same number and two notes with different numbers on each note - top and bottom numbers are different on the same note. Let me see if I can reach them any time soon (i have packed them away as I have currently lost interest in adding to these.......I showed them to a few dealers 4or 5 years ago who all confirmed their genuineness.

Got a closer look at the note ... I notice that
First Note: Inset "L" at the top corner is between 1 & 3, the bottom one is behind 1
Second Note: Both the top & bottom the inset "L" is behind 1 ...

Normally this type of error occurs during the numbering stage, where the numbers don't get incremented after impact ... and then jump twice on next impact .... sometimes only one jumps and we have mismatch numbers ... normally these get caught as the last number in the bundle does not match if the error continues for a longer time ...

Coming back to the note, these would be from the same print lot, with the inset getting printed first ... the distance & position between insets remains same as this is on the master plate ... when it comes to numbering, the distances are adjusted and remain constant ... hence if there is slight variation of position then it will be on both top & lower side and would remain same at all notes printed in that series ...

Also Notice the thickness of the prefix on the second note ... looks different ...

Without actually seeing the note, I cannot make a sure conclusion ... however to me this looks like a case of tampering of prefix to get the same number ...
