!840 C L. I don't know the mint. can any body explain? And your opinion about the grade please.

Harry

Identifying the mint can be tricky especially between Bombay and Calcutta. Madras is the easiest to identify, and its the scarcer one out of the 3 mints that produced the 1840 Rupee (continuous legend or Obv 1).

You will need to measure the coin and then count the berries on the reverse. See http://baldwin.co.uk/coins-of-india/VictoriaContinuous/CatVicContinuous_Rupee2.htm

Calcutta  Diam 31.1-31.4mm
Bombay  Diam 31.6-31.7mm
Madras  Diam 31.8-32.3mm

Like I said, Madras is the easier one, if it as a 'S' on the truncation on the obv or a 'v' in the ribbon on the rev (or both) then it's from Madras.  See my post on this here,  http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,15683.0.html I have posted images of the S and V.  Your coin is not from Madras but its from Bombay or Calcutta.

With regards the condition, it looks Unc to me but there seems to be a lot of hairlines on the coin which indicates that this coin may have been cleaned in the past. Again, I can't be 100% sure from the image you will need to look at it closer.

I can also see some hairlines and a small dent on the edge at 10-11 oclock position.. Otherwise the coin looks awesome.

Manoj, I will have to agree with Harry and Abhishek. The coin looks harshly cleaned.
