Hello All!

This item recently sold on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=330765509782&si=sV1KSl9PpkyFGi2FuduHzWDAwSM%253D&viewitem=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

The final price was GBP 406.76 (+2.00 S&H), which is around USD 635!!!  I admit it is in a nice condition (AU+ to Unc- in my opinion).  I also realize that mintage numbers are 1,219,100 according to Pridmore.  This is somewhat low, but then there are many more coins with even lower mintage numbers that do not command this sort of price even in good grades.

What is going on??  Is this a reasonable price, or is money worth less these days?  What am I missing?  Is there something others know about this coin that I don't?  Is one of you out there the lucky (really???) winner of this coin?  Please help make some sense!

Yes the 1921 4 Anna is tough to get and all the scarcer or slightly more difficult coins of BI have shot up in prices in the past few months. As you pointed out it's the lowest mintage in the series but $635 seems like  a really high price. Having said this, I'm not familiar with the prices and don't know the survival rate of the copper nickel 1921 4 Anna. I do know that they were not popular and so I'm assuming did not circulate much compared with the ΒΌ Rupee. The  copper nickel 8 Anna coin was eventually officially withdrawn in 1924 , but I don't think that the 4 Anna was withdrawn from circulation during that period.

I recently got the 4 Annas 1921 in around Fine grade for one Pound.... so now I have all 5 of the normal 4 Annas coins... some of the 5 I got many years ago.... all in circulated grades.

Lots of spots on the coin sold on Ebay.... and no visible lustre... so not all that high a grade. A rather surprising price realised... but I do not follow the prices of the better pieces of this series.

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

What is reasonable is what you want and how much you are craving it for...

I have seen some temple tokens being sold for $100+ on e-bay so this is really not a surprise. ;)
