German East Africa, 1 Heller 1907

Another coin from my toffee tin, anything that looks any good however is not being thrown back in it!

J denotes the Hamburg mint. This is one of the very few series of coins showing the crown of Charlemagne.

For an excellent overview of the (numismatic) history of German East Africa, look here. The pdf is worth downloading.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

This is one of the very few series of coins showing the crown of Charlemagne.

Add a millennium or so. ;)  That is basically a heraldic or symbolic crown, designed for the Prussian-German emperors of the late 19th and early 20th century.
