Finland 2012: Helene Schjerfbeck
« on: June 16, 2012, 07:30:05 AM »
Finland will issue a commemorative €2 coin in October, the theme would be 150th birth anniversary of Helene Schjerfbeck, a famous Finnish painer, according to some sources. Note that the news hasn't been confirmed by Bank of Finland. Mintage will be 2 million.

Confirmed. :)  The issue has now been published in the EU Official Journal. The OJ says the issue date will be September, we'll see.

Difficult, to choose one picture to reflect the work of a lifetime. Even more difficult to convert a 2-dimensional colour portrait into a 3-dimensional mono-colour metal surface.

Interesting. She was the subject of a collector coin in Finland back in 1996 (100 markkaa denomination). It was a low mintage and apparently fairly sought after as that is one of the collector coins of that era that has become relatively high in value.

Note: it appears to be the same image.

Yup, it's exact copy of 100 Markkaa commemorative. This is quite surprising as earlier Finnish commemoratives are well designed and different from others. For example the 2008 'Human Rights' issue. The design is superb compared to rest three similar issues...

What the Finnish Mint will fairly often do, and I don't find anything wrong with that, is a "double use" - issue a silver or gold collector coin and, in the same year, make a commemorative €2 coin which uses (parts of) that design. This case is a little different though ...

I must admit that I'm still surprised that this theme was chosen (especially as she has been relatively recently commemorated). I really thought that Helsinki's 200th anniversary as the capital of Finland would have been the theme for this year's €2. (Maybe the panel does not live in Helsinki? :P )

A commemorative coin featuring artist Helene Schjerfbeck to be released in October

The first two-euro commemorative coin featuring a person will enter circulation in Finland.

A two-euro commemorative coin minted in honour of the Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) will be released by the Finnish Mint on October 5th, 2012.

The purpose of the special mint coin is to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Helene Schjerfbeck, who was one of the most important and recognised artists in the Nordic countries.

The special commemorative coin will immortalise one of Schjerfbeck’s many self portraits. The obverse "national" side of the coin has been designed by sculptor Erja Tielinen. It is the first time a person is depicted on a Finnish euro coin.

The mintage of the commemorative coin is to be two million pieces.

The "2 million" figure seems to be the total mintage. There will be 1,987,000 unc pieces and 13,000 proof pieces ...

The coin was issued in rolls yesterday. Proof version was probably issued earlier..
