Thanks. Now that you guys bring this up I will try and rinse it in acetone. The brilliant luster on the coin does indicate that it has not been dipped in anything harsh.
Vikram, next time when you are in a mood to give away coins like this please do remember me.  ;) ;D

ncs exists for a reason.  if we could all fix our own problems they would shut down

Instead of Acetone, try ordering the cleaning supplies from this site. They have cleaning solutions for all types of coins.

Khalid, I never go beyond acetone. The cleaning supplies you pointed to all react with the coin's surface which I generally don't like.

I was recently offered this BI George V rupee at a price I could not pass. With a mintage of just over 2 million it is one of the key coin for BI Rupee series. Though the coin is not in the condition I was aiming for, I still liked it when I saw it. I like the rim toning on the coin.  So I picked it up. The black spots on the reverse is actually some dirt which should disappear if rinsed in acetone. The obverse has a few hits but the reverse is mark free.
I would like to know what you guys think about it. Share pics if you have one.

Thanks
Bhushan

do you know where the coin was stored before you bought it? i have seen a lot of modern coins toned in exactly the same way  recently and i am sure you should not have access to that storage in the states

Sicador

Here is mine, it is also toned near edges..
