I don't know why we only talk about proof sets here, is coin collecting only about collecting high priced proof sets?  ???

I agree Mackie. The high priced numismatic stuff like proof sets etc. is out of my reach and hence my interest.  ;)

With the mints turning into a money spinning machine by RE-minting/RE-Striking the Proof sets ....I think the Proof sets are fast loosing its sheen....

I am already fed up with mindless coins issued every year by the GOI. As a republic, we recently turned 60 in 2010. Many of our institutions were established in early/late 1950s. All of these institutions are touching the 60 figure now. We already had two coins on 60 years of Parliament and 60 years of Kolkata mint.

You can very well imagine my misery if GOI starts issuing coins senselessly on 60 anniversary of other institutions....they will put a big strain on my financial resources as well as time.

I dont know what will happen if GOI starts issuing coins on 35 states.....

We complain of high prices and still buy sets in bulk. Stop buying these proof sets and I am sure the prices will come down. They need to understand that collectors will not anything that they will quote.

Haha, that's like asking Sanjay to stop drinking water  ;D
But I agree with sanjays thesis on the varieties
As it is,  we can hardly get commems atface anymore, and so many are fraudulently scarce... Given the current scenario, that's at least 35 more headaches spread over a few years.
The other problem is that we are slowly moving to a Poland/ Canada or Australia like situation ... An overflow of coins on very banal topics. For me personally, I never liked issuing a coin for the sake of coin collectors...It should be because the event is important enough to commemorate

I agree 101% with my good friends Ashwin & Ashish
(I hope GOI does not issue a coin of Rs 101 to commemorate this  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D)

Mumbai mint must mint coins of 100 rupee for Sachin Tendulkar's 100 international centuries..I bet it would be extremely popular.. I don't think we had any sports personality on commemorative coin.. or 200 rupee coin for double century in ODI by Sachin  :) it would be fun..
