Indian temple token. Also called Ramtanka. Original ones are valuable with collector base. Modern reproductions not so much.

The couple depicted are Ram and Sita from the Ramayana .... So not only royal, but divine as well..On many of the tokens, there is a little monkey at the bottom... Suppose to be symbolic of hanuman's watchful eye over the couple.

The Ramayana essentially tells the story of how Sita was abducted by Raavan to his demon kingdom of Lanka, and the trials and tribulations that Ram and his closest companions undergo to rescue her and defeat Raavan

Thanks much PeaceBD and paisepagal. With your help I knew what to read. Had a couple of hours of fun, although now it seems like there was an unusually big gap in my education. Thanks!

The Devanagari text on the first scan reads: (Starting from 8 o'clock position)

Ram Lakshman Janakaj (which means Janak's daughter i.e. Sita) BaliHanumaan.

You may find this wikipedia article on Ramayana useful. :)

Ramayana has a great influence on Indian culture and even politics. Read more about it here.

And (I think) the second side (bottom scan) commemorates the coronation of Lord Rama. Compare the design with this picture. :)

In the last picture I posted (coronation of Lord Rama), on extreme left, we can see Lord Ganesha, which has recently appeared on a Thai coin. :)

Such a huge influence of Indian culture on other countries..So even if your piece has small or no value, it is very interesting! 8)
