I recently won a Vatican €1 of 2011 on e-bay. (Didn't pay much, in fact it was a steal!) I wonder if it has been taken out of a set and then sold or has Vatican issued a circulating €1 coin in 2011? AFAIK, Vatican has issued only 50c coins for circulation till date or is my information wrong?

And this coin is also my first coin from Vatican. Didn't have a single Vatican coin till date (not even pre-euro lire coins) so indeed very happy today!! 8)

Don't have any pics yet but will do that this weekend. :)

Congratulations, Bimat. I guess someone broke up a set and you profit.

Some pre-euro Vatican "coins" are not hard to find and a few are bi-metallic...

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Vatican City has issued 6,000 pieces of the 1 Euro 2011 coins for general circulation, plus 94,000 pieces in BU sets and 15,000 pieces in Proof sets for collectors.

The Vatican lire used to circulate - I pulled some from circulation when I lived in Italy - so the scare quotes may not be justified.  ;)

Bimat

Thanks Gerhard! Good to know that I own one of those 6000 €1 coins. :) ;)

Either that, or somebody opened a set. In any case - lucky you! :)

Yes, they are really not as expensive as most of the Vatican euro coins..I intend to get them but not sure when. :D
