New 1, 2 Cent Coins Hit Circulation

Published: 12:02

The Bank of Estonia is putting brand new one and two cent euro coins into general circulation today.

In total, 25 million one cent and an equal amount of two cent coins with a nominal value of 750,000 euros were ordered by the central bank from Royal Dutch Mint.

This amount should cover the demand for the smallest change for the next couple of years, the bank said in a statement.

Coins of other denominations will not be ordered this year.

The design of the new coins is identical to the Estonian one and two cent coins already in circulation, with the only difference being the number "2012" impressed on the reverse side.

So that means that the Estonian BU set of 2012 will have a higher demand. ::)

Only among those who actually collect "by year". Others will say, ah, no design change, and see no particular reason to get the 2012 coins if they already have the 2011 coins ...

Yep, i was at Bank of Estonia today and grabbed my share of coins :)

Hehe, now I know why so many of them are needed. ;D  Cool!  And if we did not know already that they come from NL, the word "tijd" would be a good hint ...

But the Bank of Estonia still does not intend to have complete 2012 dated coin sets produced, not even for collectors.

Usually Bank isn't ordered any newer set until oldone is sold out..
and 2011 set is available at 15€ price on bank's outlet

And it's available on Estonia post's website too. :) That's strange indeed, BU sets of some other countries like Luxembourg are sold like hot cakes and a set like this is available even after 1 year of issue for issue price! :o Nice!

Just a guess: Maybe it is due to collectors being less interested (or less numerous), maybe it is because - apart from subtle differences - the designs are the same for all denominations. I don't know, but I think it is a good idea to not make any new sets with denominations that are not issued for circulation. Other governments may want to follow that Estonian example. :)
