'Most sophisticated' fake euro coin network uncovered in Italy
From the EUX.TV newsroom news@eux.tv, Wednesday, April 02, 2008 at 08:27

BRUSSELS (EUX.TV) -- Italian authorities, supported by European Commission investigators, have arrested six people and uncovered a network that planned to circulate thousands of counterfeit euro coins.

The coins discovered are "considered as the most sophisticated type," the European Commission said in a statement issued on Monday.

The arrests and the investigation were made by the Italian Carabinieri. The commission said that it contributed technical expertise to the investigation through a unit of its anti-fraud office OLAF.

The quantity of fake euro coins continued to increase last year, according to Brussels. More than 25.000 counterfeit coins were detected in circulation since the middle of 2005.

According to the commission, approximately 1 in every 66.000 coins over the three largest denominations (2 euro, 1 euro and 50 cent) are detected as fake.

Is nothing safe from these people these days.

It is getting so you may not be able to tell the real coins from the fakes.

China is getting much better at copying the real thing.

Will future collectors have fakes and not be able to tell the difference?

Very scary thought for the future of our hobby!
