A3v1,
That's very good news.It would be even better if both Cyprus & Ireland are also issuing commemorative 2 Euro coins as well.

A further communication from Central Bank of Malta reads:
Quote
Please note that we are planning to issue the first 2 Euro Commemorative coins late next September. Prospective mintage is 200.000 coins.
The subject of this coin is still unknown.

With a mintage of 200 000, this is bound to be another non-circulating pseudo coin. Not because of the mintage alone - 200 000 is a very normal mintage for coins of the Seychelles - but because of mintage related to expected interest.

Malta is issuing a commemorative 2 Euros, which will have a mintage figure of 200,000 coins.

Neither the theme nor the design details are yet known.

It will more than likely be offered at a premium above the face value, thus making this a medal-coin issue.

You can possibly find some information at http://www.centralbankmalta.com .

Right, a3v1 mentioned that a few days ago. Currently there is no information about whether this will be available at face value or not. The mintage figure is not final yet, and the central bank's website http://www.centralbankmalta.org does at this stage not provide any info either ...

Seems that the first commemorative 2 coin from Malta will not be issued until January. Malta will of course participate in the "10 Years Euro/EMU" joint issue, but the government has no plans to issue "special" 2 euro pieces this year.
