Extra islands featured on Hawaii's commemorative quarters

You may want to take a closer look the next time you get change. There are a handful of Hawaii's commemorative quarters with a few extras on them.

According to our partners at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, coin collector Joe Aufranz found at least 10 Hawaii quarters that feature 10 main islands instead of eight.

Over the last month, Aufranz has come across 75 more faulty commemorative quarters that show extra markings near Hawaii island.

I checked my two Hawaii quarters and they don't have the error.

Reading this says the first was found in 2009 which agrees with this posting from another forum

So I wonder what is the big deal about these all of the sudden.

May be it's a production error? Extra metal or something like that?

Yes, it is a production error.  I would say either accidental or deliberate damage to the die.

Quality control at the Philadelphia mint probably did not catch the error since it does look like it could be the normal design and how many people outside of Hawaii actually know the correct number of islands.

I think it is a neat error but not sure if I would pay any extra for one.

It often takes a while for the mainstream media to pick up on these things. The dateless UK 20p was made in 2008 (probably the first half thereof) but didn't 'go viral' with all those silly eBay prices until summer 2009.
