The mystical animal referred to in replies #1-6 is called ngi ngao kham. It is an Ahom Royal symbol. It is also depicting through last character of Ahom unicode script. Tai Ahom people thinks it is a dragon (flying lion like dragon, one of nine dragons, which is popular in Asian countries), later 17th century when they converted into Hinduism people called it flying lion (simha, popular power symbol of Hinduism). So, reader may decide either dragon or lion. But it better to prefer dragon as Chinese Pixiu.

Thank you, Parikhit Phukan.
Indeed, the dragon with wings.

Rhodes & Bose in the book "The Coinage of Assam" called this animal a lion.
Unfortunately, in the preface to this book (J.N. Phukan) did not write this interesting information.
