I suppose that each store had its own number. Can anyone tell me how many variants there are?  Many thanks.
Stores in Simonstown and Kimberley and apparently there is a card token. More info here http://www.tokencoins.com/tokens.htm#ekg
...

I have one copper piece without c/m and one with "4" on both sides in my collection and have a picture of another piece with a large "X".

redwine

Piccies please  ;)
So we have 4,7,X & Y8 as countermarks.
I also see a number of variations in the text size.  Any idea how many different ones are around?

I don't know how much different pieces there may be, but it will be interesting to collect pics over a longer time to study them.

The third one is missing the "Ltd".

First one I've seen without 'Ltd'  8)  I found another holed on on ebay.

Apparently they are listed in:
Tokens of S Africa and their History (C16) - Dr G P Theron.
Maynard's 1966 book of S African tokens.
Brian Hern's catalogue of Southern African tokens (2009): Item 252 listed on page 117
Source: http://www.tokencoins.com/tokens.htm

And an '8' countermark here
http://www.abccoinsandtokens.com/SouthAfrica.Theron.C018.006.html

So now we have 4,7,8,X & Y8 as countermarks.

Here is Theron (1978) [actually C18] the only one I have. BTW several wine merchants are listed here.

A low resolution scan so that I don't have to compress it. I can't flatten the book as its one of those that fall apart if this is done.

A military organisation would have the brass ;) and would probably have the machinery to make the blanks, but they would probably not have the machinery to make dies or the coin presses. IIRC, there was no mint in Saigon at the time. They may possibly have been made in Japan or Korea.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
