I was just looking for the meaning of the initials and did not really think about the "system" but reading through the info again..........

1870 was the start of the franco-prussian war and the article just refers to the champagne he bottled with newly designed labels celebrating  "la Garde Mobile"(reservist army units) and shows his entrepreneurial spirit.

His "system" might be in the longer piece
"change his style of business, and why he had become sufficiently audacious to attempt to do without an agent on this side, and to sell direct to whomsoever he pleased. Mr. Benoit has now indited a second manifesto to the British Aristocracy, in which he "takes the liberty of recalling himself to their kind remembrance." Needless to add, the pith of this second ebullition of genius is nothing more than the "consumer direct," dished up in a slightly varied form, Mr. Benoit posing on this occasion in the character of a discoverer, having been suddenly struck by the double advantages which the consumer and himself, are to derive from its adoption"
Whereby he cuts out the middlemen and can lower the cost to the consumer & himself.  Following on he introduces the chateau/vineyard tour & tasting to assist in that endeavor.

Why I posted the complete article was also  his "trying to resuscitate a defunct branch of the trade" namely the still champagne(as opposed to sparkling) by issuing "his 1880 Sillery", which I personally found most interesting.

Sorry if I over complicated it :)

This is an 1892 advert, so perhaps his "system" included supplying other houses champagne too including the previously posted B. d´HAUTESERRE  REIMS.

No criticism of you Pat.  Reading the article was like wading through stale porridge in the dark whilst someone was shouting randomness.  I HATE that style of writing.
This is getting a bit Orwellian :o
So the man became an agent?

Any chance of seeing / paraphrasing the earlier article from Ridley?

Well, if I am correct, and his "system" was the consumer direct selling method to cut out middlemen for his own champagne and he offered to both advertise & use his method for other Houses champagne, which we know he did, then yes I guess he was an agent.  Hence any champagne he advertised & shipped had not only the name of the House(Clicquot, Hautserre) on the wine tokens but reference to his "system".

Unfortunately the earlier article from Ridley is unavailable.

My guess is PP = PRIMISTÈRES PARISIENS
And the code CR-2 in this case relates to a specific shop.
See these pieces with code BS-3 & BS-4
http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/id,151073423,var,Lot-de-4-monnaies-de-necessite-de-carton-Primisteres-Parisiens--Felix-Potin-Vins-et-epicerie-a-Paris-75,language,F.html

Here's a piccy of one of their stores at a very reasonable price of 45 euros ::)
http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/id,337052496,var,Primistere-Parisien-13e-Carte-photo,language,E.html

10 centimes for a taster 8)

And another, note the depot code!!
http://www.delcampe.net/page/item/id,356672794,var,93--AUBERVILLIERS-CARTE-PHOTO--COMMERCE-PRIMISTERE-PARISIEN,language,E.html

So  PP = PRIMISTÈRES PARISIENS & CR-2 = depot code
