Belgium 2012: Queen Elisabeth Competition
« on: February 10, 2012, 03:35:59 PM »
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Belgian "Queen Elisabeth Music Competition". For more info look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Elisabeth_Music_Competition and here http://www.cmireb.be/en/

A commemorative €2 coin will be issued on this occasion. Just came across a first design image in a Dutch forum, only to find out that it was first posted to a German forum by Gerhard Schön who is also a member of the World of Coins. :) So here it is ...

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Hehe, yes. But would he want a coin with such a dull design? ;D

Here is a larger image (from the European Commission's website) which suggests that Queen Elisabeth's portrait may not be "silhouette style". The use of English makes some sense, but it will be interesting to see when we get the first questions in Anglo-Saxon forums about what competition that is, why Elizabeth's name is oddly spelled, and why her portrait is so different from the usual ones. ;D

I just received a copy of this issue..very dull design as Christian rightly mentioned..but what I find interesting is that the coin I have received doesn't show rotated die error! Almost all the previous Belgian issues show this error..so I'm surprised to see a normal coin! ;)

Wow! Cool! I guess I will put it on the "hunt for "list. By any chance, does anyone have a scan of the other side of the coin?

Many thanks for thinking of me, guys!

This is a commemorative €2 coin, so the other side has the "normal" design with the face value, the map of Europe etc. See here for example: http://images3.numishop.eu/images/euro/feu_277002.jpg And here is small image of the BU folder http://treasury.fgov.be/intermunt/images/2eurofdcopen.jpg - apart from the regular version (issued at face), you can also get this folder (€10) or a proof piece in a box (€20) ...
