The "nationality" of this piece can be questioned. The district of Lukolela is in the former Belgian Congo, while the town of the same name is in the former French Congo. However, Googling "Lukolela Plantations" yields links to the former Belgian Congo and an unspecified Congo only, so the former Belgian Congo seems more likely.

Very nice discovery peace for me in a double sense: I had never seen it before and I wasn't even aware of plantation tokens in this part of the world. Good one!

Is the 5-pointed star significant in terms of identification?  A similar, but not identical, device appeared on numerous coins of Belgian Congo.

I think Malcolm's share makes it clear that the company was Belgian. The star is used by a number of African countries, especially if they were once using Moroccan coins.
