Zahiruddin Babur: copper coin 937 A.H. Qila Agra mint
« on: February 07, 2012, 10:20:36 AM »
Hi all,
I also acquired this coin 2day. An excellent piece I guess with full mint name and date as 937 A.H. Had never seen a Babur copper before so could not resist.
Please correct me if wrong and provide additional information and Thanks to Tariq(Ansari) for capturing the lovely image of the coin
cheers  :)

Superb ! ...and scarce...
Full mint name is "daru-z-zarb qilah Agrah / fi tarrikh 937"

Indeed a coin we don't see everyday...

Thanks Bernard!! I guess 936 and 937 A.H are the only dates seen in copper coins(Bahloli) of Babur. Isn't it??

Coins dated 935 AH exist, one is listed in the catalogue of Lucknow museum (C.J. Brown / n°9: "dar-al-khalifat Agra").
This date is very rare and most of these "bahloli" of Babur are dated 936 or 937 AH.

Another excellent coin. This is Rahman type 107. The obverse legend is Ba Dar Al-Zarb Qila Agra.

Thanks Overlord!! Ur confirmation that this indeed is a coin of Babur is most assuring as some had suggested that 937 A.H represents Humayun.. Can u please clarify on this

To quote from Aman Ur Rahman's book:

"...those dated AH 937 pose a problem as that year over-lapses the reign of Humayun as well. For reasons explained below, I believe that all specimens carrying the epithet 'Dar-ul-Khalafata' were minted under Humayun. ... It is to be noted that the Dar-ul-Khalafata epithet appears in AH 937 and continues for several years as the only epithet used for Agra. Recall that the Khutba was first read for Babur in Delhi which was also listed as his capital in his revenue list. It follows that the epithet Dar ul Khalafata was introduced by Humayun, while Babur called the city Agra or the fort of Agra."

Coins of AH937 with the "Qila" mint epithet are believed to be of Babur and the ones with "Dar Al-Khilafat" of Humayun.
