Romania also "participated" in the two previous common issues. That is, the BNR issued 10 lei coins with the same look as the common €2 obverses. Neat idea, and I would have bought them, except the mintages are ridiculously low in my opinion. The 2007 Treaty of Rome issue had a mintage of 500 (yes, five hundred). Then they made a thousand "10 Years Euro" pieces in 2009 ... and now they are apparently back to 500. Nah, thanks.

In spite of having such a low mintage and heavy price tag, they still say that "The silver coins will be put into circulation through the branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj‑Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.".

RON is new Romanian lei, 10 of which are presently worth €2.29. If you believe you can pick up a packaged silver coin with that denomination from circulation, can I interest you in buying the Eiffel tower? I can let you have it at scrap price :D
