Bulgarian script is a variant of Russian. Below the portrait is the country name BULGARIY. The rest of the text reads something like SV IVAN RILSKI. This refers to the founder of the monastery of Rila, Saint Ivan. The monastry is classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

The saint is depicted here in medieval style with a halo at the head, indicating sainthood, a piece of parchment, indicating learning in one hand and a staff in the other hand, indicating ecclesial ranks.

Medieval portraits are not reflections of real faces, but rather a group of symbols around what the artist or his paymaster thought the person should have looked like. Moreover, church rules on sainthood were not very strict in the middle ages, while miraculous stories abound and some saints have even been found never to have existed or to have been several people. Nevertheless, one can easily imagine the importance of this cultural symbol to the Bulgarian national identity.
