Discussion: Mumbai mint opens it's shop !

Visited the Mumbai Mint Coin Selling counter on 7th Feb, 2014. Here is a detailed report of the visit.

I reached at about 9:45 AM, and about 10-12 persons were already there in the Que. Some of them had come with a DD for about Rs. 9000. Most of them were interested in purchasing 1000 Years of Brihdeswarar Temple UNC and Proof Sets.

Only 20 Tokens were issued, and mine was No. 14. A total of 18 sets were on sell - Kamraj Proof and UNC (Reminted), 150 years of Independence War (Proof and UNC - Reminted), 75 Years of Dandi March (Proof UNC Reminted), 150 Years of Kuka Movement (Proof UNC), Madan Mohan Malaviya (Proof UNC), 1000 years of Brihadeswarar Temple (Proof UNC), Indian Coinage series 2011, 1000 year Brihadeswarar Single Coin, + 2 more sets in Proof + UNC, which I don't remember. There were no VIP/Executive sets for sale.

Interestingly, there was a man present there with DDs already made for a Proof and UNC set of Brihadeswarar temple, and he looked like a Broker/Dealer, who was offering to purchase the Brihadeswarar sets at some premium from the public present there at the counter. Out of 20 people present, about 7-8 had already tied up with him for the sale of their sets to him. I was also given an offer, which I politely declined. . That man was also asking all those selling coins to him to send their other friends/relatives, who had a PAN and Credit card, if they wanted to make some quick money.

So, it seems that now the Coin selling counter is attracting the people who are not collectors themselves, but just want to make a quick money.

For me, it was a waste of 2 hours, as there were no VIP/Executive sets. I purchased 5 sets of 2011 Coin series, which were available @ Rs. 305 per set.

I also get the feedback that there are no VIP/VVIP sets at the counter.

Somehow there is an extraordinary interest in Brihadeswarar temple.

I have heard some rumours regarding the possible cause of this interest. I will call you and discuss the same.
