Some British India Rupees to share from my collection. I inherited some of these coins from my dad. So they are special for me. I would appreciate any tips and advice on collecting these. I would also like to see any you have in your collection.

Dear Bhushan,

Nice coins. They are all from the reign of George VI, and contain 50% silver. They are also called half silver rupees. (Note the difference between Half Silver rupees and Silver Half Rupees).

Nice coins. 1938 was the first year of issue for the King George VI Rupee, half Rupee and quarter Rupee. In 1938 and 1939 these coins were 91.7% silver like all previous British India coins. However, due to the raise in silver prices during the second world war, the 1939 Rupee coins were withdrawn and melted. Hence making the 1939 Rupee rare and much sought after by collectors. The 1939 1/2 rupee and 1/4 rupee were not withdrawn and are not as rare. From 1940 onwards all silver coins were struck with only 50% silver, these were the last silver coins of British India.

I would recommend collecting the full set of King George VI as they are relatively easier to get even in higher grades. See the following website for details of King George VI coins http://jfcampbell.us/india/george6/george6.htm

Also, members have posted about their collection and you can follow all the posts under the topic of My list of BI Rupees

I beg to differ. The 1939 Rupee is hard to get as are the 1945 large 5 varieties-- some are not known in UNC at all!

Yes I agree, the 1945 large 5 is also difficult to obtain.  What I meant to say is to collect a "type" set of King George VI is not very difficult.

Abhay Bhai invented a nice solution. He has made his list complete by picking a fake one (knowing it fake).

Yes, atleast I can sleep peacefully, without having to worry about completing my collection of British India Rupees.

And you can see for yourself, the quality is not bad.

From picture my reflection is, it is from a genuine coin. Tooled from 1938, rupee. 8 has been altered to 9. Otherwise the coin is perfect.
