An impressive service medal. For a full description, see here. The dates refer to 3rd september 1939, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia declare war on Germany (which is a narrower group of countries than the British Commonwealth) and 2nd september 1945, the surrender of Japan. The latter date is controversial, as individual parts of the Japanese army did not surrender until 12th september and Japan itself considers 14th september the day of surrender.

There are some deceptive copies of the World War II campaign stars.Look at the top of the King's cypher.There are books that will tell you how to distinguish the genuine ones from the fakes.

Most British Commonwealth service personnel were awarded this medal along with the 1939-45 War Medal.Occasionally,the Defence Medal is found as well.

The South African-issued ones are named.
