They did that in Turkey too, remember the bin lira coins (and notes)? Problem is, any non-cash transaction - and every calculation - would still deal with the zeros ...

Not necessarily, if you allow rounding. Anyway, computer memory is cheap, so electronic handling of money is not where the problem is.
