Cents without dollars, shillings and pounds without pence
« on: November 20, 2011, 01:59:52 PM »
How many countries have had a currency system of cents without dollars?

I include countries whose denominational names are etymologically related to the word "cent" but exclude centimes, centavos and centesimos.
Have I missed any?

Cents without dollars.

Aruba: cents and florins

The Netherlands, Netherland Antilles, Netherlands East Indies, Curaçao, Surinam: cents and guilders/gulden

East Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda: cents and shillings ("senti" in Tanzania, but it's the same thing).

Somalia (1976-1983): senti and shillings

Ceylon/Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles: cents and rupees

Cyprus: cents and pounds (1983-2007)

Malta: cents and pounds (1972-2007)

Lesotho: cents and lotis - sente (plural lisente) and loti (plural maloti)

Sierra Leone: cents and leone

South Africa: cents and rand

Swaziland: cents and lilangeni

Tonga: seniti and pa'anga

Lithuania: centu and litas

Estonia: senti and kroon

Laos: 100 cents = 1 piastre (1880-1952)

Indonesia: 100 sen = 1 rupiah

Malaysia: 100 sen = 1 ringgit

And of course the euro has cents, too.

That's a point, though I suppose that would bring in the Pfennig too, etymologically. Everything is interconnected, as usual.

Shillings without pence.

Cyprus under the British had 9 piastres to the shilling (and 20 shillings to the pound).

Somalia (1976-1983): senti and shillings 100 cents = 1 shilling

Somaliland: 100 cents = 1 shilling

Pounds without pence.

Cyprus: mils and cents and pounds (1955-2007)

Malta: mils and cents and pounds (1972-2007)

Palestine: 1000 mils = 1 pound

Egypt (1953-1958): pounds, piastres and milliemes

Libya: 1000 milliemes = 100 piastres = 1 pound

Sudan: 1000 millims = 100 qirsh = 1 pound

Lebanon: 100 piastres = 1 pound.

Pounds, piastres & milliemes

Slight side issue, but one I find amusing: the word for "pound" in Egyptian Arabic is "jineah" (i.e. "guinea").  While it's spelt with a j, j is pronounced as g locally.
