WW I medallion
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:23:34 AM »
Okay, since we don't have an area for medals/medallions and this is French, here goes. This one belongs to a friend in Canada, his grandfather served in France for most of the war, ad came home with this.
Does anyone in the group read Japanese?

Bronze, 27 mm:
“FRANCE 1914-1918” paris art in left edge,Japanese characters on wide border, soldier bayoneting German/Austrian eagle
It is uniface. It was produced by Paris Art, I can't at the moment identify the "LM" monogram, but I seem to have seen it before.

I happened to come across this old topic while browsing the forum for something else. I was unable to find another piece of this medal. The lettering isn't too helpful either. I have been told it is in Chinese, not Japanese. The lettering says "Commemorating the French war" and below the dates 1914-1918. I was unable to find information on the artist initials LM.

In fact, roughly 50 000 soldiers came from "Annam " ( first name of french Indochina :  Cambodia + Laos + Vietnam )  to join french soldiers during WW1
This medal was minted as a "souvenir " given to everybody asking for
Here is another one :
