Your new 500 rupiah coin shows the Garuda, the national symbol of Indonesia. The other sideshows a flowering branch of jasmine, used commercially for scenting.

Your 1000 rupia coin is graced with angklung, a traditional musical instrument.

These coins are the result of high inflation. At independence, in 1949, the rupiah was the equivalent of the Dutch gulden. Today, the equivalent of 1 gulden would buy over 5200 rupiah. Though the values on your coins look high, the 500 rupiah is INR 2.83 and the 1000 rupiah is INR 5.66.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Or the 500 Rp would be 5 cents Australian and 100 Rp 10 cents 1 cent Australia. They have previously issued coins in other metals, the 500 and 1000 circulated along side a banknote till 1992-1999 when the 500 rp banknote was discontinued and the 1000 rp coin withdrawn or fell out of use. Now the 1000 rupiah banknote is no longer issued I believe. Can an Indonesian provide more light on the currency issue?
