Although there are differences in the legend, I take it that this is a pice struck around 1675.

obv: crowned arms dividing C(harles) R(ex) - it is not clear to me which coat of arms this is
rev: (M)ONETA/(BO)MBAYES/(A)NGLICI/(R)EGIMs

On the reverse, there may be three letters underneath, but I can't read them. Parts of a pearl circle around with remnants of outer rim lettering. This coin comes in at 13.8 grams.

Can anyone give it a Pridmore number? I believe this text variant is not in KM.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

An enigmatic coin for me at least.

Nice piece of history.

Cheers ;D

I have no Pridmore number for you, but:

The upper picture has to be turned 90° clockwise. The letters beneath are AN(NO) DO(MINI), still readable is the "Do". The date, (16)78 above the N of MONETA, is completely off flan. KM # 141
Around the uncrowned arms: HON SOC ANG IND ORI, abbreviated Latin for "Honourable Society of England for East India (Trade)"

You are quite right. Now, I can make sense of the arms. Colonial Bombay. Well, almost, but close enough for such an old coin.

For those living in or near Mumbai, the text on the ribbon is URBS PRIMA IN INDIS - first city in the Indies :)

KM starts prices at Good. That's a broad hint about the usual grade of these coins. Your coin is much better than my poor example. Perhaps because my coin is 4 years older ...  ;)

These were among the coins minted by the british in India.. Also I've heard that a lot of die variation exists. Please guide me on it as I don't have my Pridmore with me at the moment.
