I can't find a link to York - is it still going? And Hungary, indeed - that's a surprise.

York Mint Ltd. (previously York Stampings Ltd.) went bankrupt in the early 80's. Not much is known about the company. Besides these coins for Jersey there was also minted 1 collectors coin of the Netherlands Antilles as well as numerous Dutch tokens. Artists Pieter Wetselaar, Norman Sillman and Terry George used to work for this company. The source of some of this information is the Weltmünzkatalog by Dr Gerhard Schön.

York Mint Ltd, as York Stampings Ltd (which, despite its name, was apparently based in Birmingham) produced the 1972 silver wedding anniversary set for Jersey.  None of the coins were circulation issues and had unique specifications.

Regarding today's updates to the parent topic:

Whilst Jersey did adopt the uncouped Maklouf portrait for some of its non-circulating commemorative coins, the only circulation coin to use it was the commemorative 50p of 1985, and again only in the uncouped version.  For all other circulation coins until 1997, it retained the Machin portrait, going straight to the Rank-Broadley portrait in 1998.

Whilst Guernsey dropped the word "New" from its coins in 1977, the only coins with "New" were dated 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971.  No coins dated 1972 to 1976 inclusive were struck in any form.

Finally, have I dreamt this or has one of the sterling zone territories announced they will issue their own version of the new £1 coin?  I thought I'd read it on this forum but can't find it.

Haven't noticed it. Let me know!

Will have a cuppa then get my head round your other comments. There are always some things I miss while trying to update a longish topic.  :-\

I give up!  I must have imagined it.  How disappointing!

OK, those observations are included.  ;)  I wonder how long the topic will get by the year 3000?

Has it been mentioned on the forum before? If so, do you have a link? Then I can update my topic.

Phew!  I'm not losing the plot or dreamt/imagined it then!

I've read I think about the 1981 pound coins of Jersey and Guernsey being some sort of trial for the UK pound coins

Also, prior to the Euro the Irish had planned a round 50p but this was dropped as events overtook it.

Both I think I read in coin news some time ago - I no longer have the old copies.
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....

The Jersey square pound of 1981 was a commemorative for the bicentenary of the Battle of Jersey. The Guernsey piece didn't commemorate any event, I understand. I did ask the Royal Mint, a few years ago, if there'd been a public pamphlet setting out the options for prototype pound and 20 pence coins, such as was produced later for the smaller 5p, 10p etc., but apparently not.

As for the round Irish 50p, Galapagos wrote about it: From the Irish Archives.

I read similar to andyg. The Guernsey 1981 £1 surely has to be some kind of trial piece for the eventual 1983 version?  Its specifications are too similar to be a coincidence.  And as has been said, it didn't commemorate anything and Guernsey had its popular £1 notes.

The Jersey 1981 £1 had similar specifications to the 1966 Guernsey 10 shillings commemorative coin.  I've also read somewhere that the 1966 coin was a trial for a circulation 50p before the seven-sided shape was eventually decided on.  I find that hard to believe as I doubt a square coin with rounded corners would work in slot machines.
