Austrian machine token
« on: October 31, 2011, 12:43:38 AM »
Just got this - it would seem to be a token for an early automated machine for vending snacks... Vienna ?

Legends...

AUTOMATENBUFFET     QUISISANA

CENTRALE : WIENI     KARNTNERSTR.57

Is it in a book ? Any info ?

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

Never seen that one. Interesting!

I would seperate the text as:
AUTOMATEN BUFFET     QUISISANA

CENTRALE : WIEN-I     KARNTNER STR.57

CENTRALE : WIEN-I = Central Vienna, District 1
KARNTNER STR.57 =  KARNTNER Street number 57

QUISISANA = I don't have a clue

Just had a quick look on Austrian Google and found a discussion about automatic vending machines

Snack vending machine matches it fully.

The old form "Kärntnerstr." would be written today as "Kärnt(e)ner Str.", which could be translated as Carinthian Street.

I love the brilliant style of the letters, which sets the piece in the time of "Jugendstil" and "Art Deco", which means short before WWI.

May I show it at the Austrian forum (Numismatik-Cafe.at)?

To add to what Dale said.... it seems that "QUISISANA" is the name of the hotel.

To Afrasi....

Yes - please do so.

I found that hotel but it was nowhere near the actual address of the vending machine (?), or rather given on the coin.

Yes. But the token belongs clearly to the old cafe and not to the modern hotel.

So for definite the cafe on the postcard is the cafe where once you could use my token... as mentioned the postcard even includes the address as on the piece. Many thanks.

Is it listed in any book on Austrian tokens ?

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

If you ever find such a publication, PLEASE let me know!

The Universitat Wien, Institut Für Numismatik Und Geldgeschichte, has a few thin publications on
medals and medalers...might have something on tokens I don't know about....there are a few in
German Tokens Part II by Jerry Schimmel (don't see that one) and a few scattered in various other german language publications.
I have never found a publication with many in it.
