Viet Nam: Phan of 1848

Of the coins that I recently received in a trade from Viet Nam, this one was an extra, a gift.  I think that I have identified it correctly as being of the ruler Tu Duc
With the coming of the Europeans (and Americans), bad times were inevitable for Viet Nam.  Tu Duc was the last of an independent Viet Nam ruler until the 1970's.

I agree on the Tu Duc identification and I'd say KM 378. The Vietnam cash are so very difficult to collect, not because they are scarce, but because there's so little demand for them that most dealers won't carry them. You are lucky to have found a trader.

I recorded the number as Km 378a, but I'm using the online catalog Numismaster.  Sometimes the images on line are not in that great a shape.
I like what he sent to me a whole lot. I'll post some more later in the week.  The coins certainly seem genuine enough.

Size differentiates 378 (24-25 mm) from 378a (22-23.8 mm). I am a bit sceptical that 0.2 mm can make the difference between one type and another. I suspect that, since the coins were cast over a period of 35 years, their weight was diminished gradually.

The coin is much closer to 22 mm than to 23mm, but what you suggest makes sense to me.
