New circulating subtype:

My friend Wolfgang sent this scan of the Kenya 2010 bimetallic 10 shillings, which is clearly different than KM36 years 2005 & 2009: denomination numeral '10' is much bigger now, while the coat of arms is smaller.

This should be catalogued as a new subtype.




Our forum member Paul Baker (africancoins) discovered that this change was done by Royal Mint engraver and designer Thomas Docherty. Paul found the following obscure part of Mr Docherty's blog:

Started back yesterday after a week-long holiday, finished the Kenya coins and I’ve just been handed a new project to design a medal commemorating Thunderbirds!!

Do other denominations dated 2010 also show the same difference?

Paul Baker (africancoins) is the expert here, so I will quote what he has told me so far:

"I have seen images of the 1/- and 10/- of 2010. There is only one change on the 1/-, and that is the date. However, when compared to the 10/- of 2009 and earlier dates, the 10/- of 2010 has a noticeably larger and bolder "10" for the denomination numeral. This gives it more the look of the large "20" on the 20/-. Also, the legends on the ring around the "10" and coat of arms are spaced differently and have a slightly different font: the "R" and "K" show how the font is different. I expect it's likely there will be a similar change to the 5/- 2010, if and when it appears."

I now have the Kenya 5 Shillings 2010 - the numeral "5" has hardly changed - but on this side of the coin there are other changes - mainly that the two spear points are closer and are both directly under the "5". There are also some lettering changes. This should be a new sub-type.... though only a small change.
